Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has nominated US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “visionary and innovative diplomacy” in brokering a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand. The two countries had been embroiled in a territorial dispute that escalated into cross-border combat, resulting in at least 43 deaths. Trump’s intervention, which included phone calls and mediation efforts with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Chinese negotiators, led to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
In a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Hun Manet praised Trump’s “extraordinary statesmanship” and commitment to resolving conflicts. The Cambodian leader highlighted Trump’s decisive role in ending the hostilities, which had the potential to become a devastating conflict. This nomination comes after Pakistan and Israel also backed Trump’s bid for the Nobel Peace Prize, recognizing his efforts in conflict resolution.
Trump’s diplomacy in this instance also resulted in reduced tariffs for both Cambodia and Thailand, with the US agreeing to levies of 19% on their exports, down from previously proposed rates of 36% and 49% respectively. The nomination will now be considered by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, although the list of nominees is not publicly disclosed.
