The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and other state-owned health facilities are currently feeling the impact of a three-day warning strike by medical doctors employed by the Lagos State Government. The strike, which began on Monday, July 28, 2025, is over what the doctors describe as “unlawful and disrespectful” salary deductions.  The strike is expected to last until Thursday, July 31, 2025, and stems from a dispute that started in April when the state government unilaterally deducted salaries from medical and dental officers without prior consultation. Despite initial reversals, the deductions resumed in July without notice, prompting the doctors to demand immediate reversal of the July deductions and full payment of 12-month revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) arrears owed to honorary consultants at LASUTH. The Lagos State Government has urged the doctors to shelve their strike, stating that negotiations are ongoing and all grievances are being looked into with utmost sincerity and urgency. A conciliation committee has been set up to resolve outstanding issues. However, the strike may cause disruptions to healthcare services, leaving patients and families in limbo. The government has assured that contingency plans are being put in place to minimize the impact.
