Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has criticized the planned increase in salaries for political office holders, describing it as “highly insensitive” given Nigeria’s worsening economic situation. Appearing on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Falana faulted the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) for prioritizing politicians’ welfare over the struggles of ordinary citizens. He noted that the commission seems to have ignored the harsh living conditions in the country, where over 133 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty, according to recent National Bureau of Statistics data. Falana questioned the justification for increasing the salaries of political elites amidst such widespread hardship.
